Ukraine is located in the central part of Eastern Europe, bordered on the north by Belarus, on the south and southeast by Hungary, Romania and Moldova, on the east by the Russian Federation, and on the west by Poland and Slovakia. In the south Ukraine is washed by the waters of the Black and Azov seas. The Carpathians are located in the north of the country and the Crimean mountains extend in the south.

The main river of Ukraine is the Dnieper (Dnepr), with its total length of 2201 km, 981 of which is located on the territory of Ukraine, Ukrainian land is rich in various minerals, among which there is coal, iron ores, oil and gas, stone, salts, etc. Ukraine's valuable asset is mineral waters which sources are in Mirgorod, Svalyav, Truskavets and Feodosiya. Curative mud, located in Yevpatoriya and Saki, is famous for its medical qualities. Land is considered to be one of the most valuable natural resources of Ukraine as chernozem share accounts for 2/3 of it.

The biggest cities of Ukraine are Kiev (it is its capital), Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa, Lvov. The population of Ukraine is 48,004 mln people.

The fundamentals of Ukraine's state system are determined by the Constitution of Ukraine. Ukraine is a sovereign, independent, democratic, social and legal state.

Ukraine is the country with the developed scientific and industrial base. The industrial complex of Ukraine includes such industrial branches as heavy machine-building, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, . shipbuilding, production of buses, cars and lorries, tractors and another agricultural technical equipment, diesel locomotive, machinery, turbines, aviation engines and planes, equipment for power stations, oil and gas and chemical industries, etc.

Ukraine is a mighty producer of electric power.

The national currency of Ukraine is hrivna (UAH).
